In support of the University of Pretoria’s (UP) drive to remain a leading research-intensive institute, Enterprises University of Pretoria (Enterprises UP) takes on a broad scope of contract research and training initiatives on a continuous basis. A recent visit by an Exxaro delegation to Enterprises UP saw an opportunity for the two parties to discuss collaboration around the university’s mining related capabilities.
Visiting from various Exxaro’s Project Management division, the group was led on a tour of mining-related services offered by UP. The engagement aimed to showcase the various Research and Training Solutions which are delivered through multi-disciplinary teams of experts from UP.
The tour took the group to the Centre for Asset Integrity Management (C-AIM), under the leadership of Prof Stephan Heyns, which offers expertise in asset life-cycle management. At the Virtual Reality (VR) Centre, the delegation experienced the world-class innovative technology which brings real-world scenarios to life in a simulated environment. Prof Ronny Webber-Youngman shared the many benefits of this technology, including how it is designed to optimise decision-making.
Led by Prof Xiaohua Xia, the presentation at the Centre for New Energy Systems (CNES) covered possible research in energy systems and energy optimisation, management and standardisation. The TuksNovation high-tech incubator visit concluded the tour with a presentation on UP’s ability to connect science and technology for innovation and advancement.
The nature of Exxaro’s research and training needs will inform the direction of the partnership between Exxaro and Enterprises UP, as we continue in our undertaking of shifting knowledge to insight.
