A virtual reality mining experience for Microsoft

Enterprises University of Pretoria (Enterprises UP), together with the University of Pretoria (UP) recently had the pleasure of conducting an Introduction to Mining short course for 30 delegates from Microsoft.

The three day tailored programme, also suitable for non-mining personnel, aims at delivering insight and fundamental knowledge on processes pivotal to the mining industry. Attendees of the programme are also equipped with a better understanding of operations. 

As many organisations anticipate the impact of technology in the near future, Enterprises UP provides training solutions, which will ensure employees, are ‘Future fit” for the ever evolving requirements for the workforce.  This is achieved through application of modern technology and expertise in teaching and learning. 

Microsoft, together with some of their partners: Stone Three, AM2, Transnet, IsoMetrix, Phulukisa, Schneider Electric and Mint Technologies, got an exclusive experience with the Kumba Virtual Reality (VR) Centre for mine design. This is a new expansion of the Department of Mining Engineering’s world-class facilities. It is a first-in-Africa project and has established UP as the leading institution in mining engineering. The delegates also got an opportunity to explore various topics on geology, mining economics, surface and underground mining.
